Several weeks ago, Jaden got first place in his class spelling bee. The top three in each class advanced to the first grade spelling bee. And today was the day.
He's been studying the list of words for weeks now. I've been helping him each morning as we eat breakfast together. He woke up this morning and said, "I can't believe the spelling bee is today, Mom. I'm a little nervous."
He did GREAT though! There were 32 participants. He made it through seven rounds, spelling first, second and third grade words. (By the way, it was also hat day at school.)
After there were just five spellers left, they started pulling out words that these kids had not studied. So, on the seventh round he got a word that was not on the study list: makeshift. And he got it correct! Woo-hoo!
There were four kids left in the eighth round and he got another word not on the study list: opal. He thought for a minute and then said "o-p-a-l-e." Oops! Hey, I thought he did great for not having even studied that word! I'm thankful that he wasn't upset that he missed it. I think he was pretty proud of himself for what he had accomplished. And we are, too!
Some "congrats" from little brother after the bee.
Way to go, Jaden!
